Mission of SOAP Program Committee
The mission of the Society’s Program Committee is to
provide anesthesiologists, obstetricians, and other
physicians and members of related allied health specialties
with the knowledge that will reinforce past
learning as well as disseminate new concepts, practices,
and skills involving anesthesia and analgesia for
the pregnant woman.
Target Audience
The SOAP 40th Annual Meeting is intended for anesthesiologists,
obstetricians, neonatologists, obstetric
medicine specialists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists,
residents, fellows and medical students. The Society
supports the attendance by associate members in
the educational sessions of the annual meeting. The
program is generated from member requests and an
assessment of need by the program committee. Attendance
at this meeting does not guarantee competency
or proficiency in the performance of any procedures
which may be discussed or taught during the course.

- Describe an evidence-based approach to resuscitation
of the newborn;
- Critically evaluate the causes, prevention, and management
of mild to severe neonatal asphyxia;
- Demonstrate skills in newborn resuscitation which
include and are not limited to chest compression,
bag mask ventilation, endotracheal intubation,
indications for the use of plasma expanders and
vasoactive drugs;
- Interpret the effects of meconium aspiration;
- Recognize the ethical implications of starting and
stopping resuscitation;
- Identify the effects of resuscitation on the extended
hospital stay.
Multidisciplinary Case Forum
Following this session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the effect of preeclampsia on anesthetic
management;
- Delineate the potential challenges of managing the
parturient with cardiac co-morbidity;
- Understand how severe pulmonary disease impacts
peripartum care;
- Discuss alterations in anesthetic management of the
morbidly obese parturient.
Gertie Marx Research Competition
Attendees will become familiar with the most recent
and best peer reviewed obstetric anesthesia research
abstracts from around the world. (Presentations in this
session will be by Fellows)
Pro/Con Debate #1 All Parturients Receiving Neuraxial
Morphine Should Be Monitored with
Continuous Pulse Oximetry
At the end of this debate attendees will be able to:
- Discuss the beneficial and detrimental effects of
women receiving neuraxial long acting opiates;
- Critically appraise the evidence for adverse outcomes
in neuraxial blockade;
- Describe the rationale for type and length of postpartum
monitoring.
What’s New in Obstetrics?
At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be
able to:
- Assess the evidence for new concepts in the field of
general obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine from
the calendar year 2007-2008;

clinical practices of obstetric anesthesia, obstetric
medicine and neonatology.
Zuspan Research Competition
Attendees will become familiar with the most recent
and best peer reviewed abstracts for research done in
collaboration with an obstetrician-gynecologist.
What’s New in Obstetric Medicine
Following this lecture, the learner will be able to:
- Apply new findings in internal medicine as it applies
to obstetrics and obstetric anesthesia clinical
practice;
- Describe the effect of medical disease in pregnancy
on clinical practice, education and future research.

Hemorrhage
- Describe the common causes of antenatal and postpartum
hemorrhage;
- Understand the common surgical, pharmacologic,
