September 10, 2020 (6:00 p.m. EDT) – Gertie Marx Research Competition Presentations
This prestigious live-session was moderated by Dr. David Chestnut and judged by Dr. Katherine Arendt, Dr. James Eisenach, Dr. Cynthia Wong, Dr. Jill Mhyre, Dr. Richard Smiley and Dr. Carolyn Weiniger.

Eight Obstetric Anesthesia Fellows (2019-2020) presented findings from their research on genetic variants associated with preeclampsia, the use of ultrasound measurement of the optic nerve sheath as a window to assess intracranial pressure, early biomarkers associated with maternal epidural fever, rural and urban disparities in maternal care, simple yet novel clinical approaches to optimize uterine tone and reduce shivering during cesarean delivery, and what actually happens with a dural puncture epidural (DPE).

September 17, 2020 (6:00 p.m. EDT) – Best Clinical Science and Basic Science Abstract Presentations
This live-session was moderated by Dr. Arvind Palanisamy and Dr. Philippe Richebé and judged by Dr. James Eisenach, Dr. Ashraf Habib, Dr. Barbara Scavone, Dr. Jake Beilin and Dr. Katie Arendt.

Ten presenters shared their findings from clinical protocols tailoring magnesium dosing in preeclamptic women, optimizing uterine tone during cesarean delivery, and artificial intelligence algorithms at the rescue to personalize hemodynamic management during cesarean deliveries; big data analyses elucidating maternal outcomes associated with the Medicaid expansion, the MPOG registry to assess the rate of difficult intubation in obstetric patients and the risk of autism spectrum disorder in offsprings associated with labor epidural analgesia; bench research applying GWAS in postpartum hemorrhage, predictive multiomic changes in preterm labor, novel targets for the treatment of opioid-induced itching, and high-resolution thermography to ensure functioning epidural in neuraxial anesthesia research.

September 24, 2020 (6:00 p.m. EDT) – Ten Best Case Reports Panel
This live-panel was moderated by Dr. Klaus Kjaer and panelists were Dr. Lisa Leffert, Dr. Laurent Bollag, Dr. Melissa Bauer, and Dr. Katie Arendt.

Ten exceptional cases were discussed by the panel and the presenting authors. Click here to review the abstracts for these specific cases in advance of the session. The 1st case of neonatal SARS-CoV-2 infection in China was presented. Management of women with rare complications such as intrathecal morphine-induced hypothermia, hemorrhagic stroke following an unintended intrathecal catheter, starvation ketoacidosis, and rare comorbidities such as pericardial and pleural effusions in preeclampsia, pentalogy of Fallot, primary hyperparathyroidism, and metastatic pancreatic cancer were discussed. The optimal care of the transgender parturient was also reviewed.

October 15, 2020 (6:00 p.m. EDT) – Gerard W. Ostheimer – What’s New in Obstetric Anesthesia? Lecture
This prestigious lecture was presented by Ronald B. George, FRCPC.

Always a highlight of the meeting, the Gerard W. Ostheimer lecture reviewed important, relevant, and/or practice- changing literature related to obstetric anesthesia, obstetrics, perinatology, and allied medical disciplines that was published in calendar year 2019. This year’s Ostheimer lecturer will be Dr. Ronald B. George, FRCPC.

October 15, 2020  – SOAP Town Hall Meeting concerning “Labor Epidurals Do Not Cause Autism” Joint Statement
Moderated by SOAP President Dr. Ruthi Landau (Columbia University) with panelists Dr. Jill M. Mhyre (UAMS College of Medicine) and Dr. Brian Bateman (Brigham and Women’s Hospital).

SOAP hosted a Virtual Town Hall to inform the SOAP community about the findings of the referenced article, go over the important points and messaging that anesthesiologists need to be aware of, and offer the opportunity for Q&A in these difficult times when #ObAnes practice is being challenged.

October 29, 2020 (6:00 p.m. EDT) – (Panel) Be Prepared for PPH: Recent Advances, Planning, and Response

Dr. Alex Butwick, Dr. Michaela Farber and Dr. Carolyn Weiniger discussed key updates on the management of postpartum hemorrhage.

Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of preventable maternal morbidity and mortality. This panel discussed updates in the medical management of postpartum hemorrhage, triggers for escalation of care, and key anesthetic considerations for women with suspected placenta accreta. Participants were 1) provided up-to-date information on key aspects of the medical management of postpartum hemorrhage, 2) were able to identify risk factors for placenta accreta spectrum, how to develop an interdisciplinary plan in preparation for surgical delivery, mode of anesthesia, and management of critical events, and 3) were able to recognize triggers for action for hemorrhage resuscitation, including quantitative blood loss, lab indices, hemodynamics, and coordinated team response.
