Pre-Meeting Workshops

SOAP is pleased to provide three optional, pre-meeting workshops in conjunction with the 2022 Annual Meeting. All workshops will take place Wednesday, May 11, in Hilton Chicago Hotel and are accessible at an additional cost. Spots are still available for most workshops; register onsite beginning at 7 am on May 11. Registration is located in the 8th Street North Foyer (lobby level, Hilton Chicago Hotel).

Simulation Pre-Meeting Workshop: "How to Have a Difficult Conversation with your Patient"

Course Description:
This interactive session will feature role play to demonstrate techniques for engaging with patients and establishing rapport. Attendees will learn to demonstrate empathy and be able to uncover the patients' perspectives, learn how to explain risks and benefits to patients and discuss alternative approaches to care, and learn how to approach shared decision-making.

Education Workshop: Teaching in Alternative Environments (AR/VR/Serious Games)

Course Description:
Get introduced to the latest in education: virtual/augmented reality. Try out healthcare specific VR tools and learn how to implement this technology into your educational curriculum. In this workshop you will explore all of the new and emerging teaching environments including augmented reality, virtual reality, and screen-based gaming. Participants will learn about each modality as well as develop an action plan to integrate new technologies into their own programs. The workshop will conclude with workstations aimed at demonstrating what the new technology can do. Each participant will have an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with each modality.

1. Describe the various AR/VR/screen-based modalities available to the academic anesthesiologists, including evidence to support these technologies.
2. Compare and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of AR/VR/screen-based gaming after first-hand experience with each modality.
3. Identify barriers and successful methods for the development of AR/VR/screen-based gaming training content.
4. Construct a plan to integrate mixed reality technology into a specific training program.

POCUS Workshop
$500 | Register Onsite 

Course Description:
This hands-on training session with experts in POCUS includes knobology, FATE views, M-mode in pos 2 and pos 3, MAPSE/TAPSA, lung ultrasound, parasternal long axis view, and more. We will conclude with certification test and scenario training, discussion and evaluation. Includes registration for FATE (Focused Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography) pre-course requirement.
