MORE ABOUT OUR DIVISION: The mission of the Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology is to create and foster an environment of excellence in clinical care, learning, and inquiry and to provide exceptional and compassionate care to every pregnant person during pregnancy and childbirth. CLINICAL SERVICE: Our division provides services at the Sloane Hospital for Women at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital main campus (approximately 5000 annual deliveries) and at the Allen Hospital (approximately 2000 annual deliveries). A great number of high-risk or critically ill patients require consultation and cooperation between the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Department of Anesthesiology through the Mothers Center. At the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, there is a special emphasis on critical-care obstetrics. The unit contains three two-bed high-risk rooms on the labor suite, equipped for full hemodynamic monitoring and other aspects of critical care for patients with cardiopulmonary and other critical diseases. Division Faculty provide coverage of the main campus L&D suite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and for the Allen Hospital during daytime hours.

EDUCATION: We provide residency and postgraduate fellowship training in state-of-the-art techniques and strategies of labor analgesia and obstetric anesthesia. Much of the training and education occurs in the Margaret Wood Center for Simulation & Education, with a strong emphasis on use of simulation and serious games for education of rare events. The Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship program has been accredited by the ACGME since 2012, the first year such accreditation was available, and we currently have 3 fellows.

RESEARCH: We have an active research program focused on topics relevant to clinical obstetric anesthesiology, opioid use, later life cardiovascular events, 'big data' and bench research. Our digital database of labor analgesia and cesarean section cases is a valuable resource for health-services research. Over the past decades, our Division has been actively engaged within SOAP; we have regularly presented (and won!) the Gertie Marx and Best Paper competition award (including in 2021!). The Department of Anesthesiology, McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), is seeking a committed senior level, board-certified, dynamic academic anesthesiologist at the associate professor or professor level for the position of chief of obstetric anesthesiology to oversee the obstetric anesthesia service at the Memorial Hermann Hospital (MHH) and Harris Health System’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital (LBJ).

Located in the heart of the largest medical center in the United States, Memorial Hermann Hospital is a modern, state-of-the art facility. Based on 2020 Vizient scores, it is ranked 5th in the nation and 1st in Texas for excellence in delivering high quality care. With 5000 deliveries per year, the MHH obstetric service recently received accreditation as a Level IV—the highest level of maternal care—and currently caters to a high risk parturient population. In addition, it has an excellent fetal care center. MHH is a key site for providing obstetric anesthesia education and training to anesthesia residents at UTHealth, anesthesiologist assistant students, student nurse anesthetists and medical students. LBJ Hospital has approximately 2000 deliveries per year and functions as a second hub for obstetric anesthesia resident education and training. In addition, the Department of Anesthesiology at McGovern Medical School has an ACGME-approved obstetric anesthesia fellowship program.

Pursuit of excellence in clinical, translational, and basic science research is an integral part of the department and our research enterprise is supported by nearly $20 million in federal and non-federal funding—well-positioning us to become a national leader in academic research. In 2017, we established the Center for Perioperative Medicine as a multidisciplinary, interdepartmental research center to uncover novel therapeutic approaches to treat patients suffering from perioperative organ injury. We also have a key interest in studying the incidence of acute kidney injury in patients during the postpartum period.

The primary aim of this position is to achieve exemplary clinical outcomes for both the mother and infant, and the ideal candidate will have proven success in the field of obstetric anesthesia. Additionally, the candidate will possess a strong track record of mentorship and scholarly activities, along with the administrative skills necessary to promote excellence in obstetric anesthesia education. The candidate must be fellowship-trained in obstetric anesthesia and have a strong presence in the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. This position also requires the ability to working closely and collaboratively with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGovern Medical School to establish regulatory, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives, and to oversee the growth of center of excellence in obstetric anesthesia.

Rush University Medical Center is an expanding 750-bed academic medical center and level three tertiary care center located in Chicago’s vibrant west side and affiliated with Rush University. Rush currently performs 2,200 deliveries a year with significant expansion projected for 2021. The University of Chicago performs approximately 3,000 deliveries annually, most of which represent high-risk pregnancies. The appointee’s role will be to work with obstetric and nursing leaders to lead multidisciplinary clinical care efforts in the University of Chicago’s Family Birth Center. The Department of Anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine is seeking anesthesiologists for the Division of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Yale School of Medicine performs over 5000 deliveries per year.  We provide a full range of state of the art obstetrical anesthesia services, including exposure to all varieties of high-risk obstetric patients; as well as ample clinical exposure to normal pregnancies.  Approximately 85% of our patients receive regional analgesia for labor and delivery.  Faculty are involved with clinical care, bedside and didactic teaching of residents, consultation and collaboration with obstetricians regarding our high-risk patients, as well as a clinical research program with opportunities to complete several research projects and present findings at national meetings.  We have an ACGME accredited fellowship program for one fellow.

We offer the opportunity for collaborative research efforts with our obstetrical and neonatology departments.
