SOAP Stats Presidents Message

November 2022

Dear SOAP Members,

As always, there is a lot happening at SOAP with our incredibly engaged committees, subcommittees, tasks forces and SIGs. We continue to focus on building resources and offering events to advance our subspecialty. Some of our latest activities are described in this message, and you can find more on soap.org.

If you have not yet renewed your membership and made your annual donation to the Endowment Fund, please do so now! Your contribution of any amount would be appreciated.

As we head into a very busy time of year, I hope you, your families, and your colleagues are staying healthy.

Board of Directors STATS

  • SOAP members submitted an outstanding slate of nominees for the 2023 Distinguished Service Award.  The recipient will be announced in December.
  • Many of you who attended the ASA Annual Meeting in New Orleans participated in our second annual SOAP Meet Up in the Expo Hall and took advantage of the many great sessions within the Educational Track on Obstetric Anesthesia, including the SOAP panel, “Is A Healthy Baby Enough?  Anxiety, Depression, PTSD: Maternal Mental Health Consequences of Traumatic Events On the Labor and Delivery Floor.” Thank you to Dr. Tracey Vogel, MD, Andrea Traynor, MD, and Sharon Dekel, PhD, for their excellent presentations as our panelists. Many other SOAP members gave excellent presentations.
  • It was my pleasure to serve as SOAP’s representative to the ASA House of Delegates, and even more encouraging to see so many other SOAP members serving as delegates for their state entities. Our specialty was well represented.
  • Congratulations to our SOAP members on their panel selected for the IARS and co-sponsored by SOAP!  “Postpartum Hemorrhage: Novel Assessments to Guide Perioperative Management and Improve Outcomes – co-sponsored by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP)” will be presented by Cristina Wood, MD, Alex Butwick, MD, Dan Katz, MD, Cesar Padilla, MD, and Jamie Daly, MD.

ASA Committee and Editorial Board Nominations – Open through December 15, 2022
SOAP members, now is your chance to become more engaged in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and represent our subspecialty. ASA is accepting committee and editorial board applications on the ASA self-nomination page.

OPPORTUNITIES
We encourage interested SOAP members to self-nominate, as it is a way to amplify your voice, shape important narratives, and elevate the visibility of obstetric anesthesia. In additions to the three OB-related ASA committees (Committee on Obstetric Anesthesia, Educational Track on Obstetric Anesthesia and Abstract Review for Obstetric Anesthesia), please consider any other committees that relate to your non-OB anesthesia interests and career goals. For a full list of all committees and editorial boards visit the committees and editorial boards page on the ASA website.

REFERENCES
References are required as part of the application and SOAP Board members are happy to assist in this process. If you would like a Board member to submit a reference to support your nominations, let us know by December 15. Simply contact a member of the SOAP Board of Directors, provide them your qualifications and credentials for the committee to assist them in creating a strong recommendation for you, and please add them as a reference when submitting your application.

DEADLINES
The deadline to seek a Board reference is December 15.
Committee and editorial board nominations will end January 15

Member Value Committee

  • The Winter Newsletter is in production by the Newsletter Subcommittee.  We are accepting both clinical and non-clinical content, so please submit for future issues
  • As part of our ongoing effort to grow our community, the Under-Resourced Environments Subcommittee is producing SOAP Fundamentals, a new virtual learning program with both live and asynchronous content, designed for geographic regions where obstetrical anesthesia care is either limited or unavailable. The focus is to provide obstetric anesthesia training to members of the healthcare team who have not had extensive training in obstetric anesthesia.

Research Committee

  • To date, 27 institutions have confirmed their participation in the SOAP General Anesthesia for Cesarean Delivery Registry. If you are interested, learn more here.
  • The application period for the SOAP-FAER Mentored Research and Teaching Grant (MRTG) opens in December. This new grant opportunity – $250,000 over two years – will make a significant impact on the career of an emerging researcher. Please consider donating to the SOAP Endowment Fund to support this opportunity.

Finance Committee

  • Combined net assets for SOAP and the SOAP Endowment were $4.3M as of September 30, 2022.
