We are less than a month away from being able to finally meet in person in Chicago for the annual meeting, celebrating the heart of our organization – our members.  

In advance of the annual meeting, please don’t forget to register and attend the annual member Business Meeting, which is a virtual event May 3 at 7 pm Central. Content will include updates from committee chairs, announcements, and a financial review. Please pre-register to receive the Zoom link.

Maternal and Neonatal Healthcare Inequities: How We Can Do Better for our Patients 

I am pleased to reassure you that the meeting will take place in-person.  The SOAP annual meeting is traditionally a time to network, rejuvenate and visit with old and new friends in our community; and I know we are all looking forward to being together again! 
High Quality Education:
SOAP Annual Meeting is known for its high-quality continuing education, and this year is no exception. View the schedule and CMEs. Highlights you won’t want to miss include:

  • Thursday will kick off with our Keynote Speaker Dr. Ann Borders presenting "Illinois Perinatal Quality Collaborative (ILPQC) -  Birth Equity Initiative"  
  • Ostheimer Lecture presented by Dr. Michaela Farber [YE1] on Saturday
  • Three (3) Sol Shnider Clinical Tracks, one each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Gertie Marx Competition, a SOAP tradition, on Friday, May 13.

Hands on Workshops:
Start the conference off with one of our Wednesday Workshops.  All workshops still have availability, simply include it in your registration.  If you have already registered for the conference, you can add workshops by simply clicking here. Simulation Workshop: "How to Have a Difficult Conversation with your Patient"
Course Description:  This interactive session will feature role play to demonstrate techniques for engaging with patients and establishing rapport. Attendees will learn to demonstrate empathy and be able to uncover the patients' perspectives, learn how to explain risks and benefits to patients and discuss alternative approaches to care, and learn how to approach shared decision-making.

Education Workshop: “Teaching in Alternative Environments (AR/VR/Serious Games)”
Course Description: Get introduced to the latest in education: virtual/augmented reality. Try out healthcare specific VR tools and learn how to implement this technology into your educational curriculum. In this workshop you will explore all of the new and emerging teaching environments including augmented reality, virtual reality, and screen-based gaming. Participants will learn about each modality as well as develop an action plan to integrate new technologies into their own programs. The workshop will conclude with workstations aimed at demonstrating what the new technology can do. Each participant will have an opportunity to have a hands-on experience with each modality.

POCUS Workshop
Course Description: This hands-on training session with experts in POCUS includes knobology, FATE views, M-mode in pos 2 and pos 3, MAPSE/TAPSA, lung ultrasound, parasternal long axis view, and more. We will conclude with certification test and scenario training, discussion and evaluation. Includes registration for FATE (Focused Assessed Transthoracic Echocardiography) pre-course requirement.

Explore Chicago
May is a perfect time to be in Chicago, and there are a host of outdoor activities and spaces to explore in the city. Local SOAP members have compiled a SOAP Chicago City Guide, with their favorite restaurants, museums, and must-see places for you to enjoy while in Chicago.  True local’s insight!

Townhall:  “Ask the Board” – June 23 @ 7pm Pacific/9pm Central/10pm Eastern
Register to attend and get the ZOOM link.  This is an opportunity to get the latest SOAP information and ask questions on any and all SOAP topics.

  • The April SIMOM on “Case of Maternal Hyponatremia” was published on the website.
  • The April Fellows Webinar on “Benefits of Dual OB Anesthesiology/Critical Care Fellowships” was presented by Dr. Carlos Padilla.
  • The April Maternal Critical Care Lecture Series on “Maternal Sepsis and ICU Care in Pregnancy” was held April 15.  Consult the SOAP Calendar to sign up for future offerings.  Past offerings are available in the SOAP Community under Webinars.
  • New OB-Gyn/MFM/Midwife Education materials have been added to the SOAP website.
  • Teacher of the Year Award recipients will be announced at the 2022 Annual Meeting.


  • Bylaws were approved by the membership and are available in the Member Resources section on the SOAP website.
  • SOAP members elected Dr. May Pian-Smith as Vice President for 2022-23.
  • The Board of Directors appointed Dr. Ashraf Habib as Research Committee Chair and Dr. Mahesh Vaidynathan as Finance Committee Chair for 2022-23.
  • Call for Committee Interest volunteer data is being reviewed by committee and subcommittee chairs for the selection process. 
  • The Diversity and Inclusivity Award recipient will be announced at the 2022 Annual Meeting.


  • COE 2021 Designees have been notified and will be announced in May. 

Membership Value

  • Mentorship Academy “Couch Session” will be held at the SOAP 2022 Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 14, 11:30am – 12:30pm.
  • Special Interest Groups (SIGs) will be holding an informational Meet Up at the SOAP 2022 Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 14, 2:30pm – 3:30pm in the expo hall.
  • Members are encouraged to submit content for the SOAP newsletter.  The articles do not have to be clinical in nature.

Research Committee

  • The research network is developing a registry for general anesthesia during cesarean delivery and will be soliciting member participation during the SOAP 2022 Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 14, 11:30am – 12:30pm in the expo hall.
